Fifteen years or twenty years ago this would've been a passenger train. In my mind's eye I could see and hear porters busy with the baggage and their trolleys: the voices of families and friends: the whistle and the hiss of steam. - All gone now. But the station or "Vaaljapie" hasn't!
This was my third visit - this time during the day. I sat down at a small table outside and ordered apple pie and coffee. The train left, leaving a vacuum quickly filled by the silence. My order took a short while, which I spent enjoying the quiet and solitude. The apple pie proved to be the best around. Great!
My previous meals had been with friends during the evening. We could choose whether to sit outside or inside. We chose inside - warm and cozy. Each meal was tastefully prepared. I liked the use of colour, herbs and flowers along with those "old utensils" which reminded me of those days gone by. Not one plate was identical.
Armand and Frikkie have done a superb job, indeed! They purchased the station and its buildings in 2001. With vision, an artistic flair and an eye for detail, they created a cozy restaurant without any alterations to the original buildings. This is a peaceful haven where you can sit, relax and escape the hustle and bustle of urban life. A small piece of the Karoo spoilt only by the beach houses across the opposite open field. The neat garden, clean platform and cozy interior speak of dedication and love for their business. Art posters placed discreetly tell of coming events, special meals or shows.
Bookings are essential especially for the evenings. "Vaaljapie" caters only for a maximum of twelve persons or less. This is to ensure intimacy, curb extensions and guarantee personal attention to your food. The menu is good and so are the prices. This is the place to spend a quiet evening or morning with your partner or friends. This is the place!
